Demystifying ESG/Sustainability

For many the subject of ESG, Sustainability, and how to approach the subject can be confusing, complex, expensive, and paralyzing. It does not have to be nor should it. I recently attended a conference where industry experts offering support shared numbers like >$500K to comply, and referred to roles like Chief Risk Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer. Many companies feel they do not have the resources in human capital nor financial capital to take this subject on nor are they sure where to begin. In my experience many companies may already be on the journey, they just need to understand the environment and how to calculate metrics. Case in point, years ago my team eliminated waste in our spending behaviors by standardization, specification management, and studying the full lifecycle costs of goods and services. As it related to our service fleet we selected a standard platform, with eco engines, piloted telematics to study buyer behaviors and calculated the benefits in reduced fuel consumption (cost) and productivity. As we approached our early CSR reports we realized that there was also a carbon impact that could be measured. Similarly, as our direct material team worked on VAVE projects with Engineering to simplify designs and find cost savings, the team adopted new technologies, such as magnetic bearings to replace mechanical bearings which required lubricating oils. In doing so they could extend the life of the product as well as eliminate chemicals and have a positive environmental impact. These efforts were not driven by someone who had a special title and did not require additional resources. #sustainability #specificationmanagement #SCM
